As a young platoon commander fresh out of RMAS, and before attending theological college, I was serving in Belfast in the early 80s. On one patrol I had a strong sense of danger, which I couldn’t ignore, and which I took later to be the prompting of God’s Holy Spirit.
I halted the patrol whilst I re-organised the patrol route away from a known vulnerable point and sent coded instructions over the radio. The rest of the patrol and tour were uneventful.
On returning to Germany, I heard some months later of an explosion at the very location we avoided that night, and I thanked God for his overwatch and his protection.
