My husband, Mark, left the Army in 1973 to work full time for the Officers’ Christian Union (now the Armed Forces’ Christian Union). He felt a definite call from God to this role, although having done some careful sums, the salary they were offering did not seem to be enough for us to live on.
Added to this there has never been a subscription for membership, so there was no guarantee that the salary offered would always be available. The Union has always looked to the Lord to provide enough. My father, who was an accountant, was naturally very concerned about our future. We obviously prayed about this situation, as did a lot of AFCU supporters.
However, over 25 years working for AFCU there was only one occasion when the Financial Secretary said that there was a slight cash-flow problem, so would it be an embarrassment if our pay went into our account a couple of days late. That was not a problem, and throughout that time we never went short of essentials and never had to hold back on buying helpful books to give to members.
Also, we were always able to afford to pay for myself and our children to attend OCU events with Mark.
