In 2014, we in the office of The Armed Forces’ Christian Union (AFCU) were alerted to a tragic situation when one of our serving families lost their daughter, aged 7, to a rare form of cancer. We prayed for the family, and they were also well supported by their local church. 8 years later, her older sister, now 17, was attending the AFCU’s Summer Camp for the children of Armed Forces’ families.
The campers were invited to write testimonies of their experiences of God’s love and faithfulness. It was wonderful to hear how God had answered our prayers as this family were incredible in the way that they dealt with such a tough situation. This is the older sister’s testimony, shortly after she was baptised:
When God takes away the people we love from this world, it’s so easy to put the blame on Him because we can’t understand why. When that happened to my sister when younger, that’s how I felt, but I ended up realising that, rather than blaming Him, I needed to cling to Him because without Him we can’t make it through the tough times. Turning back to him in prayer helped bring me peace and helped me come to terms with the fact that I won’t always understand the ‘why’, but God does, and that’s more than enough!
